Eric Garner Die In at Westfield
I walked past the Eric Garner protest in Westfield before things kicked off and was quite heartened by it. The people there seemed mainly to be students and although they were achingly trendy and a bit smug in some cases I'm very much in favour of young people protesting about things even though I'd accept the argument that many are making that Eric Garner's death is not the most relevant issue to us here in the UK. It has to be admitted that video of a predominantly middle class crowd making the lives of a predominantly black line of security guards throws up more contradictions than you can shake a stick at.It was surprising therefore to see the trouble that happened later on. My guess is that youths who were unconnected with the original protests saw it as a chance to get unrestricted access to the shops in Westfield. Even so, I protested about things when I was younger which on reflection had little logic or concern for the disruption I was causing. Nevertheless, I remain glad I did it.
