Shepherds Bush C/Line Station Lift provision

I note in the Evening Standard a piece regarding the provision of a lift at the temporaly defunct Central Line Station. Apparently the Lift itself would cost about £1 Million, but there is a little matter of the removal of a large amount of Utilities (Gas, Water etc)which would add another £10 Million to the cost, which is making TFL etc gip at the vast extra amount. Now it is many years since I used that Station,and as far as I remember there were just two escalators. I can only think that the idea of having such a lift is tied in with the anticipated large volumes of passengers envisaged with the coming of the much vaunted Westfield. Surely though you would have to provide escalators as well. A lift breakdown would be rather an 'Egg on Face' situation otherwise! !

Depends on the line and the station - the Jubilee has good disabled access almost throughout I believe and some stations - Hammersmith for instance - also has disabled acees. But no, you can't travel on all lines or to all stations on the underground. Some of the North London line is improving - Acton Central now has step free access and Acton Town will have soon.

Having thought about this a bit, maybe it depends on the degree of immmobility. A complete confinement to a wheelchair though, would I would have thought make the Underground a no go area not only because of the immpossibility regarding escalators, but also the gaps and height problems between train and platforms at many stations.

I thought that the Underground was in effect a no go area for most mobility impaired people simply because most stations haven't got the required access, and are unlikely to have unless massive amounts of money are spent. So if there is access at Shepherds Bush other access points to the Underground must be very limited.

I'm not sure what "equation" you're trying to solve, Colin.At Shepherd's Bush Central Line, they are replacing the escalators, and the issue you raised concerns whether in addition they will install what is known as a MIP lift (for Mobility-Impaired Persons).White City station is some distance away, but the new Westfield Centre is so huge that its other end is quite near, so there will effectively be a choice of Central Line station for the visitors to the centre.  The old Central Line Wood Lane station was swept away when a new Central Line train depot was built under the new shopping centre.  However, there is a new Wood Lane station opening soon on the Hammersmith & City Line above where the old Wood Lane used to be.

Maybe a Travalator like the one at Gatwick? Wonder why White City Stn is not part of the equation, or is it too far away.Or maybe resurect the 'Ghost'Station at Wood Lane?

Hopefully, they'll have provided a more direct way of reaching the shopping mall without people having to use the main, station exit lift or escalator.Maybe they had to sacrifice the existing escalators to do it.Might explain why they have to close the station for a few months.

There are quite a few underground stations with only lift access - but then they never have only one lift so I suppose the risk of breakdown is minimised. Doesn't it tend to be the deeper stations? I think Regents park is one and Covent Garden of course..and Russell Square maybe. It can and is done but relatively rarely.We are just getting a new lift at Acton Town - but there of course the only current route is by stairs - bit of a nightmare with buggy or bags.
