Princess Victoria gastropub

This won the Time Out Best New Gastropub 2008, but has passed under my radar so far.Just wondered if anyone had been yet and what they thought?Have seen a thread on this on ActonW3.com - with mixed reviews.

I suppose you are right, Edward, but I think I would be far more likely to visit a place that calls itself a 'gastropub' rather than just a 'pub'. I think it indicates they are making some sort of effort to produce higher quality food. Or am I just a marketing person's dream?

Thanks to Yasmine Estaphanos for her comprehensive and interesting review of the Queen Adelaide.Concerning its claims to be a "gastropub", it sounds like it's still got a long way to go if it's offering 'ham, egg and chips' and 'sausage, mash and gravy'.Living a few hundred yards away, I'm all for the Queen Adelaide being upgraded, but I still think the title "gastropub" has to be earned rather than simply announced. Anyone agree?

nothing wrong with trying, good luck to them. As a resident of uxbridge rd the more the gentrification continues the better.re the Young Vic, its a pity theres not a half way house between a full dinner and the very light bar snacks. I think the bar snacks are pretty poor value as theyre tiny but i dont always want thwe full works.

I can't say enough in praise of The Princess Victoria, and how glad I am that it has opened. The guys there seem to have taken a gamble that has really paid off. They are extremely friendly and informative, and if you want to see what it's all about, why not just go there? You can choose between a three-course meal, unusual bar snacks, or just pop in for a pint or a glass of wine.I've noticed that the Queen Adelaide a couple of blocks down the Uxbridge Road is being refurbished and has a big sign outside saying 'New Gastropub'. I think a place has to earn the title 'gastropub' by being a pub which gains an excellent reputation for the quality of its food. My guess is that the people marketing themselves as a 'New Gastropub' are just jumping on the bandwagon started by The Princess Vic, who do not have a sign outside saying 'Gastropub'. As a matter of fact, I've never seen a pub that did! Has anyone else?

I quite like the idea of, what they used to call in St James, a club table - where you take pot luck as to company. Our local coffee shop, Vanilla in Acton seems to have started one and its quite friendly.

Beware though - if you don't book in advance they sit you on a huge "shared table" in the middle with everyone else. You're therefore sat next to whoever you're with not facing them. Bizarrely they put us on that table saying they were fully booked but it looked half empty the whole time we were there! Maybe their coachload didnt turn up.Chrishttp://shepherdsbush.wordpress.com/

Its great but the bar snacks are either tiny or weird "pigs cheek" anyone? and are a quid or 2 over priced. Great feel to the place though and the wine list is awesome and reasonably priced. A huge asset to the area, im very glad its opened.

It's an impressive place overall and a lot of effort has gone into upgrading it. I've eaten there twice now and it is one of the best places in the area (which isn't saying much.)The food has been generally good but that is reflected in the prices. Overall I certainly wouldn't discourage you from going but if this is the best new Gastro Pub of the Year there must be a lot of mediocrity out there.
