Carol, quite; I agree. Initially I thought he did it for the reflected glory etc., but he - you won't believe this - does not seem to do it for that reason. You don't travel all ove the country unveiling these things, sometimes in the rain, and go to subsequent events annually or whatever simply for the glory. He is genuinely concerned that we should forget. I remember quite separate from this going to an awards meeting for local police, held at Imber Court, where the DAC gave out the awards, and hearing of very ordinary police officers doing some fairly unordinary things, like rescuing people from fires, talking down suicides, disarming knife wielders etc. I stood in awe of them. There is - this is - another side to the image I used to have, partly built from experiences acquired when canvassing, of police as racist, insensitive, living in a separate (police house) world and not connecting to the local community. They have gone major strides, beginning I think under Sir Paul Condon. Not perfect, no surprise, but by goodness they are getting there.
