The Princess Victoria pub sign

Who's the lady on the new pub sign - I'm sure it is not the young Queen Victoria as a princess (or as queen).http://www.shepherdsbushw12.com/default.asp?section=leisure&link=http://nnet-server.com/server/common/revprincessvictoria.htmIncidentally, a piece of useless knowledge to share, pub signs go back to the reign of King Richard II (1377-1399) who passed a law requiring them. Not a lot of people know that.

Of course, with a different picture, it could be a ship or a train...."Princess Victoria" seems to have been a popular name for both.

That's interesting, Dan. I used to wonder about pub signs. Many years ago I painted some sample signs for a brewery, and realised how little I knew.

Jim I don't think it is either Queen V or her daughter the Empress Frederick (this is shorthand). The picture looks almost 20th century. I will check my Almanack de Gotha (a.k.a. Wikipedia) in the morning, unless some other insomniac finds the answer sooner.

Ah! A better view of whichever Victoria it is!!It could perhaps be either Queen Victoria of her first daughter the Princess Royal..both had podgy cheeks!Wonder what the answer is Dan?

Practically every female descendant of Queen Victoria born in her lifetime had to have Victoria amongst her forenames. usually in number 1 position, likewise Albert for the sons. I'll have to pop in and ask.

Maybe it's her daughter - I cycled past this afternoon and it certainy looks a later person - I'd have put the clothes at 1890s or thereabouts - or even later.
