The sound of Argentina
Don't miss The Addison Singers summer concert when they turn to folk and traditional music. Central to the programme is Misa Criolla by the Argentine composer Ariel Ramirez, in which popular and liturgical styles join hands across the centuries. The work is based on the folk music of South America - in particular the melodies and rhythms of Argentina - and is scored for a colourful array of keyboard and percussion instruments. Written in 1964 the work is both plaintive and evocative with a touch of tango, Indian pipes and guitars. It conjures up the lakes, mountains plains and glaciers of the country. There is folk and traditional music from the U K with pieces by Timothy Salter and Percy Grainger, whilst John Rutter's Five Childhood Lyrics pay homage to nursery rhymes such as Sing a Song of Sixpence and The Owl and the Pussycat. Familiar tunes are the inspiration of John Gardner's Five Hymns in the Popular Style in which such loved works as Abide with Me and Fight the Good Fight are given decidedly unusual treatment.Date: Saturday 11 July, 7.30pmVenue: St Michael & All Angels, Bath Road, London W4 1TTTickets: www.wegottickets.com/f/807 or write to AGS Tickets Classical Concert, 1A Raynham Road, London W6 0HY.
