I appreciate they broke the law but 15 months in jail! In some cases people who kill don't get that long.

Given that prisons are so overcrowded and judges under such strict instructions not to jail people if at all possible, I wonder if there is more behind this story - or either of them.

Totally agree. I read a story about a pickpocket a while ago who got about 18 months which seemed completely OTT. I would have thought a pickpocket is more of an annoyance to society rather than a danger and I can't see the point in locking him up for such a long time if at all. After all, it's our tax money that pays for people to stay in prison for ages.

It is, it seems to me that crimes that do not cause "direct" harm, ie burglary/fraud, get much tougher sentences than say a death caused by a drunk driver.

It's completely ridiculous. And that TV presenter who hurt a teenager while breaking up a fight got 2 years! It's so out of proportion.
