Lanterns in the sky

Did anybody else notice, amongst the fireworks, the lovely lanterns that were released as the new year came in?  At first thought they were fireworks that had not gone off but as they drifted over my flats realised they were actually lanterns.  Looked absolutely magical as they drifted up into the night sky.

For Heathrow incoming flights, terrorists in exploding underpants might be the main concern . . . . . . .Good thing it wasn't THIS guy.

They seemed to gain quite a height........presumably they would have burnt out before they got near the Heathrow flight path??????

I watched two float away from a nearby back garden. I watched anxiously as a lantern only just cleared our trees.  They floated off southwards . . . . (no, not the trees)

Yes, we saw them in Chiswick, and there were reports on the Ealing forum too.  They were moving surprisingly fast.
