There are allotments, actually not council run, behind Emlyn Road on the old railway line near the Factory quarter. Plots on this site are therefore very stony initially and the stones keep on coming! We have a plot there (5 years) and it is great, but a handier one would be nice. There are many small blocks of flats with grounds that are ignored and neglected which could be used for growing stuff around the Bush. There seems little interest in making change and a lack of willingness to put in effort, find staying power or tenacity. Not one year of growing stuff is the same, some crops fail, the weather becomes not just an inconvenience but a real factor. Last year was poor for a lot of veg, great for some fruit etc. Pestilences and beasties have a great power. Growing your own needs to be more the norm again and not just a middle class pursuit. As fuel prices go up, I get more and more of a buzz out of totting up how much money my harvest each week from the lottie saves me (and denies Tesco)...and so fresh. It make you realise how tired and limp so much of the so called fresh stuff we buy really is. Even if I just snip a bunch of parlsey, some thyme and rosemary, take a few leeks and a couple of stalks of rhubarb (not much else on my plot at this time of year) I still reckon I have saved 10 quid or so. And in the summer.... raspberries, balckcurrants, spuds, onions, courgettes, beans, peas, loganberries, artichokes even! Even the dog has learned to pick yer own! and it is a good place to get rid of the compost waste if you have no space at your flat or house.I used to share a large allotment with a friend down at the Fulham Palace Allotments but gettin down FPRd was so often arduous we gave that up. There should be some up by the Scrubs... was not Rollo Miles attempting this?
