The market has been allowed to fall into decline by TfL, who own part of it. Rents are too high, and planning and management has been negligent, to say the least. I'm a regular user of the market and am saddened by its decline, but am also dubious about proposals for its regeneration. I don't want its true character to be destroyed in favour of gentrification; it must remain a local, working outdoor market. Pound shops are 10 a penny but the market has the potential to again be a fantastic local space offering unique products for many more years. Has it occurred to anyone that the big supermarkets in the area might be having their say into the future of the market? I smell conspiracy in air and big money in the coffers. The council is determined to morph Sheperd's Bush into another Chiswick or Richmond. SB has always resisted - that's what makes it unique. We're going to be losing the presence of the BBC in next few years, which is sad, so we must hold on to much of the character of the market as we possibly can. True local markets are slowly being killed off in London, and they're always the heart of the local community. You only have to look at what's happening to Portobello Road market.
