Artistic Director Josie's guide to what's to come

The Bush Theatre has announced the details of its autumn/winter season, which kicks off on September 15 with The Aliens By Annie Baker.

Here the theatre's Artistic Director Josie Rourke's take on what's to come:

Every show at the Bush stands alone as a terrific new play but what is most exciting is how each of the playwrights and plays contrast so strongly with each other this season.

Playwright Annie Baker is one of the hottest young talents in America atAugust 23, 2010 the moment. Her play The Aliens takes place in the back of a Vermont Café. It's intimate setting will create a gem for the Bush space. Peter Gill is directing, one of our greatest directors and playwrights.

When I trained as a director, Peter was one of my most important and influential teachers, and it means a lot to me that he's coming to the Bush to direct Annie's play.

Fresh from its smash success at the Edinburgh Fringe, we're proud to be presenting Daniel Jackson's My Romantic History. The humour and observational brilliance of this play leapt off the page when we read it. It's great to be co-producing the play with Sheffield Theatres, who are on such a high under the new Artistic Director, Daniel Evans. His associate, Lyndsey Turner (who directed POSH at the Royal Court) is directing.

We boldly launch into 2011 with the School Season . Just after the General Election, last May, we asked Steve Waters (who wrote The Contingency Plan) to return to the Bush and write a play for us about Free Schools. Allowing parents and teachers to set up their own schools is sparking huge debate - particularly in Shepherds Bush, where Toby Young is part of the driving force behind the West London Free School.

Steve has written Little Platoons. We’ve brought this together with John Donnelly's startling portrait of a young teacher running off the rails, The Knowledge to create an exciting and incisive double bill about the state of education today.

To close this season we have the UK debut of Deirdre Kinahan's tense and funny family drama, Moment. Building on the success of Little Gem last season, we're delighted to be presenting the work of another Irish company.

The School Season boasts a cast of ten actors. We’re delighted to be able to work on such a scale this season at the Bush. This couldn’t be possible without the visionary support we receive from an ardent group of Bush Stars led by Michael and Gianni Alen Buckley. Our supporters include many of our alumni - writers and directors and actors who started at the Bush and have achieved international success. This support, alongside our loyal patrons who return each season, enables us to continue to develop and deliver the best new writing in Britain today. Come and see us soon.

Three nights of The Aliens, which opens on September 15 have already proved a sell-out, but tickets for other nights throughout its run until September 30 are still available. You can buy tickets online or call the box office on 020 8743 5050.
