Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit investigating offer weblink

The Metropolitan Police Cyber Crime Unit is investigating an allegation of data theft from the TalkTalk website. The theft was reported to the Met on Wednesday, 21 October.

There have been no arrests and enquiries are ongoing.
Detective Superintendent, Jayne Snellgrove of the Cyber Crime Unit said, "TalkTalk have done everything right in bring this matter to our attention as soon as possible. The Met has one of the largest cyber crime and fraud teams in Europe, with up to 500 specialist officers dedicated to tackling this sort of offence.

She continued, "Our success relies on businesses being open with us and each other about the threats they encounter. This case is just one example of the new generation of criminality my team are dedicated to tackling. We continue to lead on this investigation but are working with the National Crime Agency (NCA). Operation Falcon sees a more focused and joined-up approach by the MPS, the business industry and other law enforcement agencies to ensure that we quickly identify the issue - in this case alleged data fraud - and immediately set about working to protect the public, designing out the crime and arresting the culprits."

The Met Police are aware of speculation regarding alleged perpetrators; this investigation remains at an early stage; a full assessment of the alleged data theft is ongoing.

BBC News has reported that, 'The head of TalkTalk says she has had an email demanding a ransom from a group purporting to be behind the cyber-attack suffered by her company.
Chief executive Dido Harding said she did not know whether the ransom email was genuine.'
