New Strike Threat As Tube Union Ballots Staff

10,000 London Underground workers to vote on action over job cuts

Just days after the last strike threat was withdrawn, transport union RMT have announced that they will be balloting 10,000 tube workers over jobs cuts.

The union claims that 800 jobs are under threat and 140 ticket offices face closure under the Government's cost-cutting packages.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said, "We said that we would fight the jobs assault on the Tube, and the undermining of staff and public safety, and we meant it.

"This is a dispute about jobs and safety and that's why it involves all of our members on LU. We remain available for further talks but nobody should underestimate our determination to push back the tide of job and safety cuts."

A spokesman for London Underground said that customer safety remains their priority. Speaking to the BBC, Howard Collins said, "We have assured staff and customers that all of our stations will continue to be staffed at all times while trains are operating and all stations with a ticket office will continue to have one."

The union's ballot will begin on Tuesday 20th July and will close on 11th August.
