The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of snow and ice for this weekend (Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 January).
Although the most severe weather is expected to hit the North, Wales and the Midlands with snow depths predicted to reach up to 40cm in the Pennines and 5cm more widely, there is some chance of snow in London . However, at the moment this is expected to be transient before turning back to rain in the capital.
Milder air is expected to move northwards on Sunday with snow turning to freezing rain.
Travel delays on roads are expected and drivers are advised to change travel plans if necessary and bring warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger.
People travelling by air or train over the weekend are being told to expect delays.
Pavements are likely to be icy as the current spell of cold weather means temperatures fall below freezing overnight.
The Met Office advises that its weather warnings can change at short notice and recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.
