Ealing Misses Out On Borough of Culture Award

And fails to secure one of the 6 cultural impact awards

Waltham Forest and Brent have been announced winners of the London Borough of Culture each receiving around £1.35m of funding.

They were chosen from the 22 London boroughs - including Ealing - that submitted a bid. 10 authorities did not take part.

Ealing Council is putting a brave face on the news that it didn't win either the main prizes, or the 'cultural impact awards', which went to projects in Barking and Dagenham, Camden, Kingston, Lambeth, Lewisham and Merton.

The council say, ''Although Ealing did not win, there’s a lot of exciting ideas to build on.''

They cite events such as the Lovebox and Citadel festivals taking place in Gunnersbury Park this summer, and highlight Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery which will be opening under new management and Gunnersbury Park Museum also due to re-open.

They say they will continue to raise awareness of the cultural offer in Ealing and through the Ealing Arts & Culture Forum engage with the arts sector and funding agencies.

Councillor Julian Bell, leader of Ealing Council said: “Ealing should be very proud of its arts and culture and despite not being successful this doesn’t mean we won’t be able to continue to showcase our diversity and community spirit.

“Working alongside cultural and event organisations within the borough as part of the bid process has explored a host of ideas which will bring residents together to celebrate Ealing and what opportunities can be created.”

All London Boroughs were offered a grant to explore the feasibility of bidding. Ealing was awarded a London Councils grant £3,041.66 and Ealing Council contributed £4,758.34.
