Ravenscourt Park facilities "West London's most visible Olympic legacy"

World class basketball and netball courts in Ravenscourt Park have been officially opened by former England international Steve Alexander, followed by a three-on-three tournament attended by 33 teams.

The new courts, which meet international standards and are West London’s most visible legacy of the London Olympic Games, were unveiled on August 18 with over 200 local people gathered to watch.

The Ravenscourt Park facilities include an international sized basketball show court, new netball and basketball playing surfaces and brand new three-on-three basketball training and competition areas.

Seating for spectators and the landscaping around the courts has also been improved. 

Basketball and netball are two of the fastest growing sports in Hammersmith & Fulham and the council teamed up with the English Outdoor Basketball Initiative (OBI) to create the Olympic legacy facilities.

The total cost of the scheme was £197,500 with the OBI providing £75,000, Sport England £72,000 and the council £50,000.

The project will be the final legacy of the OBI. Since its inception in 1995, the OBI has been responsible for more than 9,000 outdoor basketball goals being built around England. 

For the opening, Steve Alexander was joined by the Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham, Councillor Belinda Donovan and Mel Welch from the OBI.

After the tournament, Cllr Donovan posed with three-on-three player Janusz Mylowieckie, who is seven foot two inches tall.
