Fireworks Go Ahead Despite Proposed Strike

Council reassure residents about parties in local parks

Hammersmith and Fulham Council have reassured local people that firework displays at Bishops Park and Ravenscourt Park will be going ahead despite a strike by the Fire Brigades' Union.

The council claims that bosses have been working flat out to guarantee the safety of visitors and to ensure that both event run without hitch.

Hammersmith & Fulham is hosting two bonfire parties on Friday November 5 at Bishops Park, Fulham, and on Saturday November 6 at Ravenscourt Park, Hammersmith.

Cllr Greg Smith, cabinet member for residents’ services, attacked the Fire Brigades' Union saying: " Union plans to strike on bonfire night are a cynical and reckless ploy to cause maximum disruption to Londoners.

“We all appreciate the huge risks that firemen and women take in their everyday work but during this age of austerity, when we are all feeling the pinch, this is a highly provocative move.

" Nevertheless, the council is continuing to prepare for its two hugely popular firework celebrations and is putting plans in place to ensure the safety of those who attend."

This year's firework displays have a superhero theme and event organisers are encouraging budding Spidermen, Supermen and Batmen to dress up and join in the fun.

One lucky child will be chosen from the crowd to help countdown ad lift off the 2010 main display.

The gates open for both events at 6pm, with children's fireworks taking place at 7.15pm. Both events will culminate with firework displays choreographed to music at around 8pm.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council, who are organising the celebrations, advise people to get to the parks early, as there will be no admittance after the displays start. There will also be no admittance to any vendors, and it is prohibited to bring your own fireworks, sparklers, alcohol or dogs.

There will also be lots of other fun to for all the family with a funfair and food stalls at both displays.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for a 33% saving - £4 per person online via www.lyric.co.uk or the Lyric Theatre Box office on 0871 221 1722. Tickets also available on the gate for £6 (under fives go free).
