Council Scoops Top Award

H&F wins “Most Effective Political Team of the Year”

Hammersmith and Fulham Council have won an award at the Municipal Journal's Achievement Awards 2009.

H&F picked up the “Most Effective Political Team of the Year” prize at a gala ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Park Lane on Thursday evening (June 25).

In their entry form, the Council wrote: "We have clearly outlined our ambitious plans for the area to residents, partners and staff and translated this into practice. Effective political leadership has acted on local concerns and used innovation and efficiency to deliver improvements in vfm (value for money), service quality, customer access and resident satisfaction. We have reduced council tax by 3% for the third year running, while improving services. We are now rated at the highest CPA level (4 stars, improving strongly). We have also been successful in delivering key local priorities e.g. in averting Post Office closures, establishing 24/7 policing and opening Westfield London, a £1.6 billion investment.”

The council that won local government’s top award, 'The MJ Best Achieving Council of the Year', was nearby Ealing which was commended for its “consistent and real improvement coupled with a constant ear to its public's concerns”.

Now in their sixth year, The MJ Achievement Awards were established to publicly recognise and promote achievement in local government services.

Michael Burton, editor of The MJ, said: “We had a great response this year and it is a fantastic achievement by Ealing and all the other councils that either won or were shorlisted for an award.”

The MJ is a weekly news magazine read by UK local government's top managers.
