" My thoughts are with family and friends of the victim during this difficult time. My officers are supporting the Homicide and Serious Crime Command officers who are investigating this matter and liaising with next of kin.

" I understand this must be of great concern to the local community but I would like to reassure you that Hammersmith & Fulham Police continue to take a pro-active approach towards reducing violent crime and knife crime across the borough, which includes a range of local police enforcement, education and prevention interventions have recently been implemented.

The murder victim was reportedly returning home after celebrating his 30th birthday with his girlfriend and friends when they were set upon by a gang of five hooded men.

One of his friends was also stabbed, but was saved when the knife hit his credit card.

The gang, who are also thought to have robbed their victim, reportedly ran off from the estate towards nearby North End Road.

The man was rushed to hospital, but was pronounced dead just after 6am.  Police are now informing his next of kin and a post mortem is due to take place at Fulham Mortuary.
