Police officer fired after testing positive for cannabis

A serving Met Trainee Detective Constable attached to Hammersmith and Fulham borough has been dismissed after a drug test found he had taken cannabis.

Following a random drugs test on Wednesday, 9 March, the officer tested positive for the Class B drug. This meant he had a case to answer in respect of the Standards of Professional Behaviour under: 'Discreditable Conduct'. The investigation into his conduct was led by the Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS).

The Chair of the misconduct hearing, Assistant Commissioner Helen King, having considered all of the evidence provided by the Appropriate Authority and representations from the officer found the case of gross misconduct proven.

She stated that the officer, “very clearly knew that it was against the law to smoke cannabis on the occasions that he chose to do so. The public have a right to expect police officers to maintain the highest standards of behaviour on and off duty and in particular that they comply with the laws they enforce on others. When this does not happen, it very clearly undermines public trust and confidence on which our model of policing relies.”

The officer was dismissed without notice following a Special Case Hearing on Thursday, 30 June.
