Calls for Cycle Hire Scheme to be Extended to H&F

Boris urged to send bikes west instead of east

Kit Malthouse, Conservative Assembly Member for west central London, has called for Mayor Boris Johnson's cycle hire scheme to be extended to Hammersmith and Fulham.

He says: "The cycle hire scheme has proven to be a real asset to people travelling in central London. That’s why I want to see the scheme extended to Hammersmith and Fulham.

“It’s clear from my constituents’ letters that this is something west Londoners really want to be part of.
Many people want to have the opportunity to cycle for environmental, health and economic reasons, but simply don’t have the space in London to keep a bike.

“If plans are underway to extend the scheme eastwards, then the same arguments can surely support our calls for a western extension. It would ease congestion, improve access to major London attractions and, in the long run, should prove to be a real financial benefit to London."

Hammersmith and Fulham Council and Hammersmith and Fulham Cyclists are also urging the Mayor to bring the scheme westwards, with sites such as Westfield shopping centre, Fulham Palace, Earls Court, the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith Apollo and Chelsea, Fulham and QPR footballs clubs suggested for docking stations.

John Griffiths, Chairman of HFCyclists, the local branch of London Cycling Campaign, says: "We want the Mayor’s cycle hire scheme to be extended into the borough so that residents who don’t own a bike can try out cycling and see all the benefits.

"Cycling allows you to travel much more quickly through congested roads. It is cheaper than running a car and it creates a wonderful feeling of freedom that you don’t always get on foot."
