Local People Invited to Diabetes Awareness Morning

Have a free health check at the Lyric Theatre on September 9

Hammersmith and Fulham residents can find out more about diabetes, how it is treated, what support is available and the latest research into the condition at a Diabetes Awareness Event being held on Saturday September 9 from 10am-1pm at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith.

The event is being organised by the North West London Diabetes Local Research Network (NWL DLRN) along with staff and patients from the nearby Richford Gate Surgery.

Several thousand people in Hammersmith and Fulham have been diagnosed with diabetes, but many more have the condition and are completely unaware of it.

If left untreated, diabetes can lead to life threatening complications including blindness, kidney failure, and heart disease. The earlier people are diagnosed the more likely it is that these complications can be prevented.

Visitors will be able to have a FREE diabetes health check and find out whether they are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, and how to prevent it if they are.

They will also be able to talk to local experts from the NHS, local council and community groups such as Diabetes UK about support is available in the borough.

The NWL DLRN team will be there to showcase the latest research into Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes research and how local residents can help find better ways to treat the condition - or even a cure.

The NWL DLRN is part of the National Institute for Health Research, and provides researchers with the practical help they need to make clinical studies happen in the NHS, so that more research takes place across England, and more patients can take part.

To find out more about the event visit www.northwestlondondlrn.org.uk, email nwldrn@imperial.nhs.uk or call Danielle Neal on 020 7594 9752.
