The Prime Minister has now named the date for the General Election as Thursday 6th May 2010 – and I am very proud and honoured to have accepted the Conservative nomination to be Hammersmith’s next Member of Parliament.

I grew up in and around Hammersmith and my family still live here. It’s a great part of London, but we face several challenges. Together, we can make it even better.

Over the past three years I have worked hard to campaign on local issues – such as opposing Labour’s third runway at Heathrow, which would bring a plane overhead every 90 seconds, working with residents to stop a lap-dancing club opening in residential Avonmore and also against Labour’s closure of local Post Offices. I have also listened carefully, by knocking on doors and sending out surveys, to best understand the issues that matter most to you.

The choice at this election is either five more years of Gordon Brown or a new Conservative Government under David Cameron to bring the change we need.

Britain needs change in order to act on debt and get our economy moving; get Britain working by boosting enterprise; strengthen and support our local NHS; raise standards in schools; make Britain the most family friendly country in Europe; and change our broken politics.

Your vote really can make a difference here in Hammersmith. In order to
form a Government, the Conservatives must win this seat. This election will be between Conservatives and Labour – the Lib Dems always come a poor third here and are spending all their time campaigning in Brent.

This General Election, vote for change. I want to be your MP to fight for the things that matter most to Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush. I will not let you down.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown today fired the starting gun on a May 6 General Election which will present people in Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush with the most important choice for a generation.

Labour will secure the economic recovery, protect frontline services and extend its support for families and communities.

A Conservative party committed to taking billions out of the economy would
kill the recovery, hit jobs and put at risk services families here rely upon.

The choice is clear for Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush. If you value your Sure Start centre, if you want to protect our frontline services, including schools and police from Conservative cuts then give your support to Labour on May 6. Here in Hammersmith we have had
a taste of Conservative policies, under Cameron's favourite council. Cuts in care for the elderly, which they promised in their manifesto not to make. Thousands threatened with the demolition of their homes and destruction of their quality of life. This is the face of the Tories in
power - it hasn't changed.

Labour took the tough decisions to take us through the recession and get Hammersmith and Shepherd's Bush on the road to recovery. Let’s not throw it all away with a Tory party that would take away support for families whilst offering tax cuts for the wealthiest few.

Labour has got the big decisions right. Our priorities will always be jobs, prosperity and higher standards of living for families. The threat from the Conservatives is real. They would cut support to the economy now – choking
off recovery and risking jobs. It is only Labour who will deliver a future, fair for all.

The worst kept secret in politics is over and the General Election will be
on May 6th together with the London local elections.

I believe the single most important issue that will determine the outcome of
the coming General Elections is the Economy. Which party do you trust more on this? The party that got you into this mess to begin with or the one which is still in denial about the cause of the whole financial crisis, blaming public sector spending rather than the bankers?

It was the Liberal Democrats who were right to warn against the dangers of the bubble economy and it's our Treasury spokesman, Vince Cable MP who has the best plan for getting our finances back on track again.

I have found from speaking to residents and owners of local shops and businesses that our messages of fairer taxes, investment in our children and young people and the tackling of the borough's social ills resonate well with local people.

Furthermore, the Liberal Democrats have taken the lead on environmental
issues and are now taking the lead on political reform. We want to put trust back into politics by giving you the right to sack corrupt MPs, overhaul Westminster with a fair voting system and require all politicians
to pay full British taxes.

The choice in this election is between more of the same with Labour and the
Conservatives or real change with the Liberal Democrats.

You have the exciting opportunity of changing the face of politics in the UK
and choosing a fresh start for Britain.

I and the Liberal Democrats promise to clean up Westminster, deliver fairness, and change politics for good!
