Love Food, Hate Waste

Events around the borough will help people use up those leftovers

From Saturday November 19 to November 27, H&F Council, working with Recycle for London, is taking part in various schemes to encourage residents to save everyone money by wasting less food.

There will be Love Food, Hate Waste stands across the borough during the week, where residents will be offered free advice and tools to help them cut down on the amount of food they waste.

These include rice measurers, bag clips, recipe cards and meal planners, along with suggestions on how to make sure portion sizes are judged correctly and tips on tasty recipes for leftovers.

The events are:

* Tuesday 22 November, 10am-2pm - Kings Mall, Hammersmith
* Thursday 24 November, 10.30am-2.30pm – Lyric Square Farmers’ Market, Hammersmith
* Friday 25 November, 9.30am-2.30pm – North End Road Market, Fulham
* Saturday 26 November, 9.30am-2.30pm – North End Road Market, Fulham

Residents who make a pledge to plan to reduce their food waste will automatically be entered into a prize draw to win one of ten recipe books that show how to make the most of leftovers.

On Thursday 24 November at Lyric Square, there will be a cookery demonstration giving residents some tasty top tips on using different foods that regularly go to waste, as well as free tasters of the dishes cooked up.

Residents who submit the best recipe suggestions for using leftovers to create exciting meals will be in line to win fantastic Love Food, Hate Waste prizes.

On average, each household in the borough could save £50 a month by reducing the amount of food that is wasted and thrown away. That equates to a whopping £600 a year. Currently, it costs £128 per tonne to dispose of waste, so cutting down on the amount of food that is thrown away in H&F also means that costs would become lower and the taxpayer would save money.

Cllr Greg Smith, Cabinet Member for Residents' Services, says: "Every bit of food wasted in the borough means that everyone's money is being wasted through high disposal costs. These events offer real, practical solutions to saving money and food, and residents can pick up some handy cooking tips as well!"
