Old Oak Children Bury Time Capsule at Oaklands
Part of project studying new development less than mile from their school
Children from Old Oak Primary School have braved the December weather to bury a time capsule at the Oaklands South regeneration site at Old Oak.
The project, run by local outdoor education charity Urbanwise.London, has seen ten and eleven year-olds from Old Oak Primary School explore their local area and its history as they study the changes that are taking place on their doorstep.
The children’s time capsule contains memories about life in the school, a postcard to their future self from each student that participated in the project, copies of their lessons and photographs of the children with the team behind the Oaklands project.
Carlos Izsak, Maker Education Co-ordinator at Urbanwise.London, said: "We've thoroughly enjoyed working with Old Oak School investigating changes in the local area with support from Notting Hill Genesis and QPR. We're super excited about the time capsule and hope that when found in the future it will help others understand what life for Old Oak children was like in 2018."
The children also had the opportunity to engage with the team behind the Oaklands regeneration during the sessions, including Queens Park Rangers Football Club (QPR), Notting Hill Genesis, CZWG Architects, hgh planning consultants and main project contractors Galliford Try Partnerships, to discover more about the development less than a mile away from their school.
The Oaklands South scheme, being delivered by Notting Hill Genesis and QPR, along with main contractor Galliford Try Partnerships, is the first major scheme to come forward in the Old Oak regeneration area. Once it is completed, Oaklands will create 605 new homes, 40% of which will be affordable, and a new creative neighbourhood expected to attract companies from the new high tech economy providing hundreds of new jobs.
Work is currently ongoing on the first phase of the scheme.
