Sporting Clubs and Stars Honoured in Excellence Awards

Mayor Belinda Donovan meets our future Olympians

Sports clubs and young athletes from across the borough have been recognised for their hard work at the annual Hammersmith & Fulham Sporting Excellence Awards.

Held in the Mayor's Parlour, Hammersmith Town Hall on Tuesday, September 11, the event honoured seven clubs who all made a fantastic contribution to the community over the last year.

They were Sands End Boxing Club, Let Me Play, Chelsea & Westminster Swimming Club, Hammersmith & Fulham Rugby Club, Hammersmith Harriers Netball Club, Phoenix Flyers Trampolining Club and Rocks Lane/Bishops Park Tennis.

All of these clubs have been awarded either the local sports accreditation award called Club Excel or the national accreditation Clubmark award.

Five young Taekwondo stars, who all receive Linford Christie Trust grants from the council to support their development also attended.

The youngsters all represent St Katherine's Taekwondo club and are competing at the very highest level of national and international competition. They are Grace Smith, Yassine Saidoune, Endris Tafilaku, Shayanne Sarsoza, Jamarah Irish.

Some of these young people are already training with the GB youth squads and could have a chance of making an Olympics in 2016 or 2020.

The Mayor, Cllr Belinda Donovan, says: " It was wonderful to rub shoulders with some of the borough’s young sports stars. Who knows, some of these youngsters may even go on to future Olympic success!"
