Work Improving Goldhawk Road Begins Today
£3.8 million facelift will take nine months to complete
Work begins today, June 30 to improve Goldhawk Road, one of Shepherds Bush’s busiest roads, in a £3.8m major revamp.
Hammersmith & Fulham Council is carrying out work to widen and repave the footways, resurface the carriageway and de-clutter the street.
It is part of the wider Shepherd's Bush town centre west regeneration scheme covering the area from the eastern ends of Goldhawk Road and Uxbridge Road to Coverdale Road and Devonport Road.
The works, which also include better loading spaces for businesses and more space for safer cycling, will last nine months and will be done in phases. Until the road is resurfaced next year, traffic will still be able to travel in both directions.
The project includes plans to upgrade and redesign the roads and footways in the area and improve pedestrian crossing points, which will provide better links between Shepherds Bush and White City.
The improvements could last up to 20 years, meaning that fewer street repairs will be needed in the future, saving taxpayers money.
The enhancements are also expected to lead to a 35% reduction in the number of road traffic accidents in Goldhawk Road and Uxbridge Road in future.
Councillor Wesley Harcourt, cabinet member for transport, environment and residents’ services, says: " As with any road improvements, we need to ensure that disruption is kept to an absolute minimum. If any issues do arise from the works, I want to hear from residents so that I can endeavour to make things better for them."
The project has also been appointed the council’s flagship Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) pilot scheme. SuDS solutions help better manage the rate of flow and the amount of rainwater that enters the sewers, helping to reduce the risk of flooding.
The types of suitable SuDS measures that will be used could include permeable surfaces, more trees and greenery. Lime Grove has been highlighted as one area that would benefit in particular from improvements to the road through the introduction of SuDS.
If the trial in Shepherds Bush is successful, the council says it could lead to the widespread use of SuDS across the borough in future.
