Council Holds Transport Summit at Town Hall

Culmination of campaign to "Get H &F Moving"

H&F Council's Environment and Residents' Services Select Committee is hosting a free Transport Summit at Hammersmith Town Hall on Tuesday November 8 from 7pm till 8.30pm.

The council says everyone is invited to the meeting, which is the culmination of its long-running transport campaign, Get H&F Moving.

As part of the Get H&F Moving campaign over the past ten months, the council has been asking residents and commuters what improvements they want to see in the borough that could help ease congestion and delays on the transport network.

The council received hundreds of comments from residents and at the meeting, councillors and residents will discuss the most talked about issues, like road works, congestion and cycling, and question a panel of experts made up of representatives from Transport for London, Thames Water and Heathrow airport’s operator, BAA.

Another topic that will take centre stage will be BAA’s recent announcement that they plan to trial a scheme at Heathrow, that allows the use of both runways simultaneously as part of the Government’s work on exploring how to make airports "‘better, not bigger". The trial means that Fulham residents living under the flight path face increased aircraft noise.

Cllr Nick Botterill, who will also be a panel member and has been heading up the recent campaign, says: " The summit is the perfect opportunity for residents to air their views and get answers from the decision makers. The campaign has shown how important and unifying transport is – it’s a topic that effects us all, whether you’re a cyclist, car owner or travel on the tube.

" We have taken on board residents' suggestions and have already been making big improvements to the borough’s transport, but we want things to improve even more and this is a great stage to share their ideas and get some answers."

H&F Councilsays during 2011, it has been making a positive difference to transport in the borough having introduced new car club bays, made improvements to highways and successfully lobbied for funding from Transport for London to create a new slip road on Fulham Palace Road which opened earlier this week, helping to ease congestion on the busy street.

The borough however still has the second worst congested roads in the capital, coming close behind the City of London’s streets, and the Wimbledon branch of the District Line has the most densely packed carriages outside central London.
