Children's project is raising funds to store and sell leftover food to community

Young 'waste warriors' at Old Oak Primary School and Old Oak Community Centre in Mellitus Street in Shepherd's Bush have launched an initiative to share leftover food with the local community.

400 children aged five to 12 attending the school are already running a Food Waste Project, with a food stall open every Monday at 3.15pm in the KS1 playground selling fruit, vegetables and bread gathered from local businesses, markets and supermarkets to the community on a 'pay as you feel' basis.

Bubble & Squeak, as the children have named their scheme, is one of many initiatives, including the Real Junk Food Project's Food Waste Supermarket in Leeds, which emphasise healthy eating and aim to distribute soem of the 15 million tonnes of perfectly edible food wasted in Britain every year.

The kids are aiming to get the whole community involved in changing attitudes towards food waste and are launching a crowdfunding campaign on Monday 24 April to raise £4,500 for a customised shipping container to store and sell the surplus food.
