Labour’s Andy Slaughter has been elected as Member of Parliament for the Hammersmith and Chiswick constituency winning over half the votes cast.

He received 24,073 votes to gain a winning margin of over 15,000 ahead of the Conservative’s Andrew Dinsmore.

Labour was always expected to win the newly formed seat which incorporates parts of Shepherd’s Bush as well as the wards in Hounslow Borough in the Chiswick area.

Mr Slaughter, who was a barrister and leader of Hammersmith & Fulham Council before becoming an MP, had previously represented the former Hammersmith constituency which he won with a majority of 17,847 in 2019.

Following the announcement, Mr Slaughter thanked the other candidates for running “a really decent and civilised election”, praising the standard of the hustings and run up to the vote.

He also acknowledged the addition of the Chiswick wards to his old Hammersmith seat. “I’ve done the best I can in a slightly hastily arranged election to make myself known and to meet people in Chiswick. I realise I’ve got a long way further to go, but it is a real pleasure. It’s such a fantastic area to represent.”

Naranee Ruthra-Rajan of the Greens narrowly took third place ahead of Eraj Rostaqi of the Liberal Democrats with 4,468 votes.

Louise Petano-Heathcote finished fifth with 2,929 votes.
