A head teacher has been appointed for the new Hammersmith Academy which is currently being built in Melina Road, W12.

Gary Kynaston will take up the post in April 2010, the Hammersmith Academy Trust has announced.

Kynaston is currently Senior Deputy Head at Quintin Kynaston School in Westminster.

However, he is no stranger to Shepherd's Bush, having previously taught at Phoenix High School. There, he was involved in a numeracy summer school to help local primary-aged children improve their maths skills in preparation for entry to secondary school.

“His areas of expertise include curriculum improvement through teaching and learning, school self-evaluation, and secondary school strategy. He has also had responsibility for Investors in People, ICT, and specialist schools designation, and as his school’s senior school improvement consultant has supported and advised other London schools in various projects, including the rebuild of Pimlico School under the ‘Building Schools for the Future’ programme,” a statement from the Hammersmith Academy Trust says.

Kynaston is married with two children and lives in west London.

Work to demolish the former Stamford House young offenders’ institute, where the new Academy will be built, has been ongoing throughout the summer.

When completed, the new school will accommodate up to 780 mixed ability students aged 11-18 from the local area and it will specialise in creative and digital media and information technology.

The Academy’s sponsors – the Mercers’ Company and the Information Technologists’ Company- say the school’s intake will be non-selective.

The Academy will receive its first students in September 2011.
