Australia Road early years centre Randolph Beresford has been shortlisted for a prestigious national prize.

It is one of just five among entries from across the country in he running for Nursery of the Year in the Nursery World Awards.

Randolph Beresford is funded by H&F Council and teaches three to five year-olds.

Judges were particularly impressed with the nursery’s forest school, which gives the children the chance to learn outdoors among the trees, helping foster a love of the natural world.

"We’re really pleased,” said senior teacher Jo Skone. "It’s been a team effort.

“I think it’s important for everyone to see that people who choose early years as a career are doing it because they want to make a difference.

"The competition is so high. There are a lot of people doing a lot of good things in early years so to be recognised like this is really nice. It’s very exciting."

Jo says she and the team introduce children to many different experiences to help them learn and develop their interests, benefitting them for many years to come.

A key part of this is outdoor learning at the nursery’s woodlands.

"It enables children to gain a love of the outdoors,” said Jo. "It gives them the opportunities to assess and manage risk, to solve meaningful problems, work as a team, and learn to think in creative ways that they can’t necessarily do inside with toys.

"We need people to care about the natural world. If you haven’t introduced a child to the natural world when they’re young, the chances are they’re not going to invest in it when they get older."

The Nursery World Awards ceremony will be held in central London on 22 September.
