Cycle Library Created at Burlington Danes School

Bikes for adults and children available to encourage active travel at school

Bikes for both adults and children will be available to borrow

Ark Burlington Danes Primary Academy Parent Teacher Association has been awarded a grant for the Burlington Danes Family Cycle Library from Walking and Cycling Grants London.

The Burlington Danes Family Cycle Library aims to help more parents and children to cycle to school and for leisure. The project, based at Ark Burlington Danes Primary Academy in White City, will lend a range of adult bikes, child bikes and seats to families from the school and the wider community for half term periods between April and October. This will be supported by one-to-one cycle training for families provided by Bikeworks.

New cycling families will be paired up with existing cycling families to support cycling to school together, and there will also be a series of family cycle rides in the local area open to all.

Famida Pathan, Chair of Ark Burlington Danes Primary Academy Parent Teacher Association (PTA) said, “A recent survey with our school community showed that over half of parents never cycle their children to and from school. This is primarily due to a lack of confidence when it comes to cycling on the roads, no access to bikes, and unfamiliarity with bike seats for children. The Burlington Danes Family Cycle Library aims to open up cycling to parents and enable a substantially larger group of parents and their children to cycle for transport, exercise and leisure. We are extremely grateful to Walking and Cycling Grants London for their support.”

Olu Alake, Strategic Partnership Programme Lead for The London Marathon Charitable Trust, said, “The London Marathon Charitable Trust is proud to be working in partnership with Transport for London on their Walking and Cycling Grants London programme. It will be exciting to see the impact that Ark Burlington Danes Primary Academy PTA’s project will have in creating new opportunities for cycling within the local community, helping to fulfil The Trust’s mission of inspiring activity.”

Walking and Cycling Grants London, a programme funded by Transport for London in partnership with The London Marathon Charitable Trust and managed by the environmental regeneration charity Groundwork London, has given the PTA £9.972.

It offers funding of up to £10,000 over three years to community groups such as residents’ associations, charities and youth groups for projects that encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to walk and cycle safely.
