Sainsbury’s is moving into the vacant site, formerly housing Argos, in the West 12 Shopping Centre on Shepherd’s Bush Green.

The site, just west of the shopping centre’s main entrance, faces onto the green but access to the store will be inside the centre.

A letter from agents acting for the supermarket accompanying planning applications to alter the shopfront and add new signs and an ATM, says: “ On behalf of our client, Sainsbury’s Supermarkets Ltd, we are pleased to enclose an application for shopfront alterations, installation of louvres and associated signage at the above site.

“ The application relates to the former Argos unit at the front of the W12 Shopping Centre which is located along Shepherd’s Bush Green, and it is proposed will become a new Sainsbury’s store which is accessed from inside the shopping centre.

“ The proposal will provide a high-quality shopfront and will maximise the day-to-day operation of the retail unit and accessibility of pedestrians. The proposed ATM will be located on the front elevation of the retail unit fronting Shepherd’s Bush Green which provides a high level of natural surveillance, thereby ensuring the safe use of the ATM.”

You can view the applications on H&F Council’s website, using references 2022/02271/FUL and 2022/02272/ADV.

This move to open a new Sainsbury’s Local store within the W12 Centre means that shoppers will have a choice of two supermarkets, alongside Lidl - a similar set up to the Livat Centre in Hammersmith’s King Street.

It will also make Sainsbury’s by far the most dominant supermarket in Shepherd’s Bush, with existing local stores across the green in Uxbridge Road, further west in Goldhawk Road and to the south in Shepherd’s Bush Road.

The Coop meanwhile has stores in both Uxbridge and Goldhawk Road, while Tesco has a store on Uxbridge Road alongside its superstore further south on Shepherd’s Bush Road. Though this building, at 31 Uxbridge Road, has been put up for sale and is currently under offer, Tesco has confirmed it has no plans to end its tenancy and is continuing to trade normally.
