Day of Celebration on Saturday for White City

With festival, flash mob and Wormholt Park Fun Day

Hundreds of local people are expected to take to the streets on Saturday with celebrations taking place across White City and Wormholt.

A festival, organised by Big Local, Phoenix School and community and regeneration organisation Urban Partnership Group, or UPG  will kick off at midday.

And in Wormholt Park, there will be a Fun Day from 2pm organised by Hammersmith & Fulham Council and the Friends of Wormholt Park, with inflatable games for all ages including a bungee run and assault course, face painting and refreshment stalls.

The organisers promise the festical will be a street party, reclaiming the green spaces of the area with dance performances on balconies, live bands in the streets, guerrilla gardening and rows of stalls celebrating local fayre.

There will also be White City's first ever flashmob event taking place between the redbrick buildings of the White City Estate.

The event will culminate in a live jam involving as many local musicians as will, supporting the flashmob dancers in a grand performance on our outdoor stage on Commonwealth Avenue.

The stage will be flanked by stalls with food, crafts and other stands.

At both events, local people will be invited to help shape the local area's future. Festival organisers will be asking they would like to see £1million, awarded to the area by the Big Lottery being spent.

And in Wormholt Park, people will have the opportunity to view and comment on the new designs and layout options for the park. Architects Levitt Bernstein will be at the event to show their ideas which they have devised after speaking to local people.

Wormholt Park was opened in June 1911 by the then Mayor of Hammersmith, Cllr Norman William Shairp, just five days after the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary.

Deputy Leader, Cllr Greg Smith, says: " This borough has numerous beautiful parks and open spaces, each with their unique history and identity. The council is looking forward to carrying out a number of improvements to Wormholt Park so that it can continue to flourish for the next century.

"I hope plenty of people attend this event so we can find out what improvements they would like to see."

The Wormholt Park Fun Day takes place from 2pm-5pm, while the White City Festival is from 12pm till 4pm.
