A Chinese restaurant in London has been given the worst possible hygiene rating after inspectors found it was crammed with piles of cardboard boxes and items including a kid’s keyboard, guitar and scooters.
Mandarin Star in Shepherds Bush was so cluttered it needed professional cleaners to come in and sort it, according to a council report obtained by the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
The business on Goldhawk Road was given a zero out of five score by Hammersmith and Fulham Council on July 6 after a food hygiene inspection on 29 June. A report by the inspector shows they told the restaurant owner to hire a professional waste removal contractor to de-clutter the site. They said: “You have far too much clutter and rubbish throughout your premises.
“This has over the years become dirty and means that not only is it harbouring dirt and other matter, but it also means that you are unable to clean your premises properly. The sheer extent of the clutter and rubbish will necessitate you employing the service of a professional waste removal contractor.”
Photos taken by an inspector revealed filthy floors inside the restaurant and stacks of cardboard boxes in the kitchen. Other items found inside the eatery include a guitar, children’s toy keyboard, scooters and a shoe.

The report also said the restaurant needed new counter tops and shelves because the current ones couldn’t be properly cleaned. It adds: “The laminated counters and shelving were worn and not capable of being effectively cleaned… The ventilation canopy was greasy and requires a thorough deep clean.”

The inspector said they couldn’t see any evidence showing where the restaurant had sourced food ingredients from, such as meat and dairy and told the owner to start recording such information. The business owner was also told to set up a clear area to prepare raw meat, properly label cleaning products, and make sure all staff handling food are trained in food hygiene.
Hammersmith and Fulham has nearly 2,000 eateries. Just three businesses have a hygiene rating of zero, while over 1,300 have a rating of five. Mandarin Star was contacted for comment.
