History in the Making on Wormwood Scrubs

Marion Brydson reports on Saturday's epic park run

An epic day at the Scrubs this Saturday morning, it wasn’t the weather this time, it was a little bit of history in the making.

Rizwan Rauf was awarded a fantastic looking 100 jacket for the 100 runs he has accomplished along with all the amazing volunteer work that he does every week, one of the Scrubs superstars, it is the continuity of volunteering like this from Riz, Martin, Rob and Debbie that makes the Scrubs Park Run such a great experience for everyone, perhaps after the last few muddy weeks I should re phrase that, make the Scrubs Park Run… possible for everyone.

We were honoured by the attendance of Paul Sinton-Hewitt the founder of Park Run with his wife Joanne Sinton-Hewitt and Dorothy their beautiful liver and white Springer Spaniel.

We got an inkling something special was going on as Anita and Alex, the founders of Wormwood Scrubs Park Run were back from their new home in France. They were in attendance with a friendly couple both sporting 100 shirts. Knowing how difficult it is to reach the century milestone we should have realised how special they were but it was only back at the TVH clubhouse afterwards that most of us became aware of our important visitors and their significance.

The Scrubs would like to thank Paul for his massive contribution to the health and well being of people worldwide through Park Run.

Kate Donoghue was awarded a red 50 t-shirt today for all her attendances and was also back volunteering again rather than running (thank you) accompanied by the lovely little Miss Poppy dog. Kate had her teeshirt signed by founder Paul but due to a misprint it was minus the 50 on the back, Oh Kate and where is that Trophy?

First male home was Christian NIELSEN in a time of 20:08, another bit of history in the making 50 runs today, many congratulations.

First female home on International Women’s Day 2014 was Andrea BROUGHTON in 24:11. well done Andrea.

The weather is clearing and although it was a muddy and challenging run we all managed to get round some with trainers on and others without. We had seven first timers running and two personal bests from Shelley JANETZKI 31:33 and Gideon REID 20:57 - amazing result in such muddy conditions.

Looking forward to seeing everyone next week for more scrubs mud action.
