Charlotte Le Rougetel says September brings a big turnout for the parkrun

Parkrun 171 - September 13

It was a first for me at Wormwood Scrubs parkrun today. As I was running down the far side of the course trying to avoid the brambles, a man drove a horse and cart past me on the path!

That single very surreal moment aside, everything else for our 171st parkrun seemed to progress perfectly normally.  The weather was perfect; warm with a nice breeze. It was obvious that the summer holiday season is well over as we had a crew of 59 runners - the most we’ve had for months - and many of our regulars returned to the fold. Welcome back Martin Gillies and Andrea Broughton.

There were just seconds between our first three runners over the line. Craig MACLELLAN of Ranelagh Harriers was first in 19:06 on his first appearance. Tom IRVING of Ealing Eagles Running Club was second over the line in 19:10. And Gideon REID of Serpentine RC was third in 19:16. Andrea BROUGHTON of Thames Valley Harriers was the first female over the line in in 22:48, her 12th win in 35 appearances.

Race director Rizwan RAUF has now overtaken Fraser BRYDSON to take top spot on the men’s points table with 970 pts. Despite being injured and not running today, Marion BRYDSON has retained her lead with 1130 pts.

Congratulations to our six runners who recorded new Personal Bests and thank you to this week’s volunteers: Fraser BRYDSON, Kirstie TEW, Marion BRYDSON, Natasha DEVON, Rizwan RAUF, William PAYNTER and Charlotte LE ROUGETEL.

A special thank you to Natasha DEVON for volunteering. Natasha writes for Cosmopolitan and after a health scare last year is taking on “woohoo I am alive!” challenges set for her by her readers. The challenge that brought her to the Scrubs was to volunteer in her local community. We were very glad to have her help and look forward to reading her feature in January.

And, finally, congratulations to Fran Santos, whose photograph appeared in the Southern Running Guide this month alongside a story about parkrun.

Look forward to seeing you all next week. Charlie

Parkrun 170 - September 6

Not a breath of air at Wormwood Scrubs parkrun this week as 40 runners lined up for our 170th event. That 40 included seven first timers and five of our group this week recorded new personal bests. Big congratulations to Scott BREWERMike BRAZIERPaul TAYLORAnthony KALLERGIS and Marion BRYDSON, who was particularly ecstatic as it had taken her two years two nail a new PB following the course extension last summer.

First over the line this week was Matthieu PREVOT of Clapham Chasers RC with a time of 18:17, his fourth win in 17 appearances. First female over the line was Anna JOHN in 25:36 - her first win and first appearance.

The current standing in the women's annual points competition:

Happy birthday week to James MALCOLM and thank you again for baking us the millionaires’ shortbread. If you ever fancy baking it again for any reason, we’re all very happy tasters. And thank you Tim BARLOW for bringing Paula and baby Rafferty to parkrun this week. I wasn’t sure Marion was going to let you leave with the baby!

Congratulations to my fellow parkrunner Kirstie Tew on her 2:05 in the Great North Run on Sunday. I was very happy to sit on her tail finishing at 2:06, as well. An amazing day. If you haven’t raced the Great North Run I thoroughly recommend it.  Thank you, too, to our volunteers Aidan FERRAND, Ben LE ROUGETEL, Charlotte LE ROUGETEL, Fran SANTOS, Peter JORDAN, Rizwan RAUF and Robert FERGUSON, whose voice is thankfully returning. If you would like to volunteer for this week, please check the rota at http://www.parkrun.org.uk/wormwoodscrubs/futureroster/ - we’d love to have a photographer if you’re any good with the camera.

This week's full results and a complete event history can be found on the Wormwood Scrubs parkrun Results Page.

Parkrun 169 - August 30

It was a celebratory day at Wormwood Scrubs this week for our 169th parkrun as regular runner Nick MICHAEL ran his centenary run, 93 of which were at the Scrubs. Great excuse for cake, too, as he was presented with cupcakes lit with ‘100’ candles to mark the occasion.

The weather was fine apart from an annoying headwind on the far side of the course. And the ground underfoot was close to perfect. 41 runners joined us, including eight first timers. Eight runners also scored magical PBs – so congratulations to Blake PARKERAugusto SILVASenan GRIFFINScott BREWERFraser BRYDSONPaul TAYLORElizabeth HILLERBY and Michelle CLINTON.

First across the finish line was Stuart KING (SM25-29) of Heanor RC in a time of 17:10 on his first appearance at the Scrubs and first female finisher was Isobel REA (VW35-39) of West 4 Harriers in 19:47, her 5th first place in 6 appearances.

Current standing in the Men's annual points competition:
Fraser BRYDSON (Thames Valley Harriers) 857 pts.
Rizwan RAUF (Unattached) 826 pts.
Archie Charles THOMAS (Unattached) 777 pts.

Current standing in the Women's annual points competition:
Marion BRYDSON (Thames Valley Harriers) 931 pts.
Charlotte LE ROUGETEL (Unattached) 686 pts.
Kirstie TEW (Unattached) 565 pts.

Big thanks to all our volunteers this week: Charlotte LE ROUGETEL, Debbie PETERS-MILL, Kevin BEALE, Matthieu PREVOT, Rizwan RAUF and Rob FERGUSON, who was very, very quiet thanks to a nasty bout of laryngitis – we wish you a speedy recovery!

If you would like to volunteer, it would be much appreciated by everyone who runs at the Scrubs. You can check the future roster here http://www.parkrun.org.uk/wormwoodscrubs/futureroster/ and to take part simply email wormwoodscrubshelpers@parkrun.com.

I’m running the Great North Run next weekend and wanted to say a big good luck to my fellow GNR parkrunner Kirstie TEW.

We had four unknown runners this week, which means they won’t receive a time or a credit towards their 50th milestone, so please everyone, don’t forget your barcode! See you next week.
