Bumps, hills and rabbit holes make for a challenging Saturday morning

Parkrun 217 - August 1

It was a lovely sunny summer morning on the Scrubs as 42 runners assembled on the first Saturday of August. The going has been good for some time, with the course nice and dry, albeit always challenging; the hills never get any easier, the rabbit holes seem to get bigger by the week, and the terrain is always rough and bumpy. There was an abundance of flags and poles out on the course this week, helping to guide runners round.

First over the line was Scrubs regular Colm Doherty, in 19:02, one second off his PB of 19:01 and only a couple of seconds outside of his goal of sub-19 – well done on a great run and his third first at the Scrubs. Colm was followed by Paul Woodgate of Thames Valley Harriers in a new PB of 19:49 and James Spender in 20:01. Well done, guys!

First woman over the line was Barbara Maddison of Thames Valley Harriers in a new PB of 25:33 in her first first at the Scrubs – well done, Barbara! She was followed by Kirsty Tew of Thames Valley Harriers in 25:41 and Sharen Roberts of Swinton RC in her first run at the Scrubs, finishing in 25:54.

The highest age grade of the day was 71.13%, achieved by Ross Gatenby.

Three other new PBs were achieved – Charles John-Jules, Jerome Matil and Jaqui Austin. Well done!

We’ve got a very long way to go, but at the moment, the standings in the points tables are as follows: for the men, Manuel Corriente on 756 points, Robert Ferguson on 748 points and Nick Michael on 674 points; for the women, Andrea Broughton on 597 points, Barbara Maddison on 583 points and Andrea Calderwood on 553 points. Everything to play for!

Also, congratulations to Scrubs regular Ben Le Rougetel for completing the 100-mile Ridelondon cycle ride yesterday, in a time of 5 hours and 44 minutes. It will do wonders for your running!

Thanks very much to this week’s volunteers: Andrea BROUGHTON, Fraser BRYDSON, Martin GILLIES, Peter JORDAN, Charlie LE ROUGETEL, Ben LE ROUGETEL, Christian NIELSEN, Paul TAYLOR, and Kirstie TEW. As you know, we rely on volunteers, so if you’d like to get involved in volunteering at the Wormwood Scrubs Parkrun, please email wormwoodscrubshelpers@parkrun.com. There is some space in the schedules in the coming weeks.
