To help keep the parkruns going as winter weather sets in

Parkrun 232 - November 14

For a second successive Saturday, the Wormwood Scrubs Parkrun was wet and muddy, although perhaps not quite as windy as the week before.  Therefore, it was heartening that 45 runners still turned out and made it around.  I certainly recommend either trail shoes or spikes from now on.

The field included five first timers, three of whom had never done the Parkrun anywhere before.  If you can make it out first thing on a Saturday in these conditions it doesn’t get much harder, it’ll be great to see you again!

First over the line this week was Georgia FEAR (JW15-17) of Highgate Harriers in 19:23.  Georgia is undefeated in the women’s category in her five race career but this was her first outright victory.  Congratulations Georgia!  Runner up and first veteran was Scrubs regular James SPENDER (VM40-44) in 19:44, no mean feat in the conditions.  Third place went to Dave GARDNER (VM45-49) in 20:11 whilst new (to the Scrubs) Marcus BISHOP (SM20-24) arrived home fourth in 20:18.  The top three finishers also recorded the top three age graded scores between them on this occasion (an unusual outcome).

Sarah TAYLOR (SW30-34) was runner up in the women’s race and fifteenth overall with 24:17.  Karen Victoria SVENDSEN (SW20-24) was third woman, making the finishing line in 26:02 and nineteenth overall.  Catharine SOWERBY (Serpentine RC, VW50-54) clocking 27:05 in 23rd was the first Veteran Woman to finish.  Also congratulations to Bryn SMITH (26:03, SM30-34) and Angela THOMPSON-SMITH (32:52, VW50-54) on setting new PBs in such miserable weather.

Current standings in the Men's annual points competition (all to run/volunteer for in second/third):

1      Manuel CORRIENTE  (16 races, 1,761 pts)

2      Nick MICHAEL (21 races, 1,639 pts)

3      James SPENDER (17 races, 1,630 pts)

Current standing in the Women's annual points competition (all to run/volunteer for full stop):

1          Andrea CALDERWOOD (15 races, 1,360 pts)

2          Marion BRYDSON (14 races, 1,346 pts)

3          Kirstie TEW (13 races, 1,315 pts)

We are very grateful to the volunteers who made this event happen: Andrea BROUGHTON, Marion BRYDSON, Fraser BRYDSON, Hugh FRASER, Barbara MADDISON, Simon MADDISON, Jerome MATIL, Nick MICHAEL, William PAYNTER, Kirstie TEW.

The rest of November and early December are looking as bleak as the weather for volunteers, so if you can help us out, please let us know by emailing wormwoodscrubshelpers@parkrun
