Nick Cracks the Scotch Egg Challenge

Princess Victoria's head chef scoops top prize in annual contest

Nick Maloney, head chef of the Princess Victoria pub in Uxbridge Road has scooped top prize in the Scotch Egg Challenge 2015, which took place on October 20 at the Canonbury pub in Islington.

20 chefs and restaurants took part in this, the fifth Scotch Egg Challenge, with both traditional and uncovnetional takes on the classic being tested by both the public and an expert judging panel, including food critic Fay Maschler, chef Henry Harris, food editor Bob Granleese and journalists Hugh Wright and Zoe Williams.

After more than 20 pork and egg pairings had been eaten over a three hour period, the results were announced with Nick's Thai-inspired Scotch egg, named winner in the unconventional category.

The pub says: " The winning egg – a Legbar hen’s egg wrapped in nori seaweed with Tamworth pork, a cashew and panko bread crumb and shavings of lime zest – will be available on our bar snack menu until the end of November.

" So if you weren’t able to make it to the competition, don’t despair – pop down and try our award-winning egg!"

This is the second triumph this autumn for the Princess Victoria and for head chef Nick. In September it was named London County Dining Pub of the Year in the newly published Good Pub Guide.
