New Sainsbury's Pledges to Support Big Local

Supermarket will back local organisation throughout its first year

Shepherd's Bush's newest supermarket, Sainsbury’s Local in Bloemfontein Road, has chosen Big Local Wormholt & White City, the community development organisation based at the White City Community Centre, at its chosen charity to support during its first year.

The supermarket, on the ground floor of the new Bloom development, opened on August 5. Collection pots for the community organisation will be kept at the tills all year, and the store has pledged to support local projects like this week's W12 Festival.

Local volunteer Sue Iwai cut the ribbon and thanked Sainsbury’s for agreeing to supply 120 packed lunches to all those performing or helping out at the festival.

She said: "It saves me an awful lot of work, because I have to look after the performers on the day and now I don’t have to worry about their lunches."

Fellow resident and Big Local board member Les Jackson added:"It’s great that Sainsbury’s have engaged with the local community and supported us, as well as recruiting local people."

Sainsbury's says  more than half of the supermarket’s 32-strong workforce live less than five miles away, and four members of staff live on the White City estate.

Store manager Thevarajah Kandeeban said: "I did some research into the area and found out about the Big Local, and I really like the projects they are developing. Having local staff is not just about it being easier to get to work – we want the jobs to go to the local community as well."
