Planned improvements for pedestrians and cyclists

The Council are planning significant changes to Goldhawk Road in a bid to make the area more pedestrian- and cycle-friendly.

In a forthcoming consultation, local residents and businesses will be asked to comment on a series of proposed improvements for the stretch of road between Cathnor Road and Godolphin Road.

The proposals include:

• Widening the pavement on the southern side of the road and part of the northern side

• Turning the 3m-wide pelican crossing into a 5m-wide 'straight-across' toucan crossing

• Creating a shared footway (pedestrians and cyclists), north and south of the toucan crossing,
  between Cathnor Road and Brackenbury Road.

• Rebuilding the raised entry treatments in Stowe Road and Conningham Road to accommodate the Goldhawk Road pavement-widening

The Council say the wider pavements will be of benefit to both pedestrians and cyclists and that the location of the toucan crossing means it will be heavily used by pedestrians from both Brackenbury School and the new Hammersmith Academy.

Toucan crossings are wider than pelican crossings and are designed to allow both pedestrians and cyclists to cross together.

The proposed work will mark the third phase in a series of improvements along Goldhawk Road: in the first phase, the entrance to Brackenbury Road was narrowed and a raised entry treatment installed, while the second phase saw the removal of the large central islands and guard rail in the middle of Goldhawk Road.

Once the consultation is over and the Council has approved the measures, work will begin in March and is expected to last several weeks.
