The Upper Room Moves to Temporary New Home

Local charity based in Becklow Road during building work at St Saviour's

Shepherd's Bush charity The Upper Room has temporarily moved home while building work is carried out.

The charity is dedicated to helping local homeless and other disadvantaged people, serving up 26,000 hot meals every year and giving one-to-one support at its headquarters at St Saviour’s in Cobbold Road.

This month however, it has shifted operations a seven-minute walk away to the Victoria House community hall in Becklow Road, off Askew Road, W12.

"Once the building works are complete later in August we will move back to St Saviour's," said a spokesperson.

The Upper Room was founded 27 years ago as a soup kitchen at the Wendell Park church, at the western end of Shepherd's Bush.

Recently, members of the public voted to back The Upper Room – which does essential work helping hard to reach members of the community – when it applied for funding in a competition sponsored by builders’ merchants Jewson.

As well as providing free three-course meals for up to 80 people on weekday evenings, from 5.30-6.45pm, The Upper Room also runs a multilingual jobs support service from noon-5pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, and helps teach ex-offenders to drive, in return for 80 hours of voluntary work.

Since 2010, 190 ex-offenders have gained driving licences through the project, significantly improving their employment prospects, and in the past three years the charity has helped more than 200 in-need service users to secure jobs.
