Work on Westfield Extension Set to Begin in May

Phasing programme shows construction continuing till October 2017

Construction work on the extension to Westfield Shopping Centre is set to begin in May.

Acting on behalf of Westfield Shoppingtowns Ltd, chartered surveyors Montagu Evans have submitted a phasing programme for the works which shows that contruction activities on land north of the current shopping centre on Ariel Way could begin in the second half of May and continue through till October 2017, if the council gives the go ahead.

Phase 1 of the development will consist of engineering and construction operations comprising the formation of the basement and facilitating the future layout of the basement of extension, which is described as:

a mixed use scheme to include demolition of existing buildings and associated structures, the closure and alteration of highways, engineering works and construction of new buildings (ranging from 2 - 23 storeys) and structures (including podium) up to 87.975m (AOD) to provide up to 61,840sqm (GEA) (net increase) retail use (A1) including an anchor department store; up to 8,170sqm (GEA) restaurant and café use (A3 - A5); up to 2065sqm (GEA) office use (B1); up to 1,600sqm (GEA) community/health/cultural use (D1); up to 3500sqm (GEA) leisure use (D2); and up to 1,347 residential units (up to 127,216sqm (GEA)) (C3); plus creation of a basement, an energy centre together with ancillary and associated development, new pedestrian routes and open spaces, cycle parking, car and motorcycle parking and vehicular access and servicing facilities.

After planning permission was granted for the extension in September last year, H&F Council said that round 8,000 new jobs would be created at the 7.64 hectare site, with new restaurants, cafes, leisure facilities, offices, community space and shops, including the first John Lewis in west London.

The scheme is also expected to provide between 160 and 250 affordable homes.
