A national lung health charity is looking for a volunteer to act as the leader of its support group in Hammersmith & Fulham.

Up until recently the local monthly meetings of the Asthma + Lung UK charity were led by Linda Makins.

As she is stepping down, the charity is seeking a new volunteer leader to guide the online meetings and play a key role in supporting and championing the group.

The role is open to anyone with a commitment to making a difference, whether you have a lung condition yourself, have supported a loved one with one, or simply want to help others live better lives.

Respiratory issues in Hammersmith & Fulham led to 1,935 hospital visits last year, including 1,475 emergencies. Asthma accounted for 200 admissions, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). for 160. Across the borough, over 6,700 people are receiving treatment for asthma, and nearly 1,800 for COPD. These figures highlight the need for continued support for people with breathing conditions in the community.

This group meets online via Zoom on the third Wednesday of every month from 1 PM to 2 PM. The meetings include guest speakers, discussions, and support for those living with lung conditions like asthma and COPD.

No prior experience is required, and full training and support are available. You need to be tech-savvy (especially with Zoom), enthusiastic about creating a supportive community, and able to commit to one hour a month for meetings. Don’t worry if you can’t take on the responsibility alone, roles can be shared among multiple volunteers.

Linda Makins, the group’s former leader, said, "I will be eternally grateful for the experience which has enriched my life in so many ways. I first joined the group in 2017, following my COPD diagnosis, and immediately enjoyed the opportunity to make new friends, particularly people with similar conditions who share the many difficulties caused by the breathing problems which can limit our mobility, affecting so many issues in our everyday lives.

"Helping to organise the Breathe Easy Group meetings and invite a wide range of guest speakers was an incredibly informative experience. Making contact with experts and organisations like Open Age, Health Watch, and Talking Therapies provided us with tools and activities to improve both mental and physical health. I would highly recommend getting involved with a Breathe Easy Group as a life-changing experience."
