The most recent official figures show that parts of Shepherd’s Bush have some of the highest rates of Covid-19 infection in London at the moment.

The area designated by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) as Brackenbury which is east of Dalling Road and south of Goldhawk Road saw 33 cases in the week to 29 June giving it an infection rate of 575.2.

Most other parts of Shepherd’s Bush have a rate above 200 and the average for all of Hammersmith & Fulham is 258 the second highest in London with only Lambeth ahead. The average for London is currently 168 and for the country as a whole it is 208.

The local picture is not uniform however, with White City seeing infections falling in the most recent week with only six positive tests.

Local health professionals have suggested that the high rates seen in some local neighbourhoods could have something to do with population demographics with a higher proportion of younger people, particularly students living in certain neighbourhoods.

There have has yet been no reports from local NHS Trusts of a significant rise in Covid-19 related hospitalisations. It is believed that as many of the people catching the virus at the moment are younger and those that have been double dosed are far less likely to be seriously ill if they do catch the disease, that the relationship between infection and needing hospital treatment is less strong.

The younger generation in particular are being urged to get vaccinated at the moment. As well as the large vaccination site at the Novotel in Hammersmith which is open daily for walk ins (not Astra Zeneca second dose) from 8am – 6pm there will be a pop-up vaccination clinic at the White City Community Centre on India Way offering Pfizer vaccines to those 18 or over from noon to 6pm on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 July and 10am – 6pm on Sunday 11 July. First and second doses of Pfizer are being given at both locations.

Up to and including 3 July 5,348,565 people in London had received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 3,566,445 had received two doses.

The latest figures for fatalities show that there was one more death from the disease in the W12 area during April bring the total since the beginning of the pandemic to 80.
