101 Runners Enjoy Wormwood Scrubs At Its Best

Autumn offers perfect parkrun conditions apart from perilous potholes

The Scrubs was at its autumnal best for running this Saturday morning. Cool, a slight breeze and a hint of moisture in the air. The course was pretty firm underfoot, even down the back straight, due to it having been a relatively dry week. The potholes are still there, though - beware!

A total of 101 people ran the two-and-a-bit laps of the part of the Scrubs that is the parkrun course. Run director Ben Le Rougetel briefed the runners on the course, before handing over to our timekeeper this week, Lan-Lan Smith, who counted us down.

The hills never seem to get any easier, but it was soon all over. The first runner to cross the line was Sage Pearce-Higgins, in 17:07. An unknown runner was second (no bar code!). Andrew Mitchell of Thames Valley Harriers, was third over the line in 17:50. The first woman over the line was Heather Eccles of DH Runners, in 21:55. She was followed by Amelia Carman, in 23:31, and Fran Lou, of Darwen Dashers RC, in 24:23. Well done, everyone!

The three highest age grades were recorded by:
Andrew Mitchell (VM45-49) – 81.40% for the time 17:50 (third overall);
Sage Pearce-Higgins (SM30-34) – 76.24% for the time 17:07 (first overall); and
Tamlyn Harrison (VW55-59) – 75.10% for the time 24:46 (46th overall).

We also welcomed back Rob Ferguson, usually our run director, but who hasn’t actually run the parkrun for over a year, due to injury. Another Scrubs regular, James Malcolm, is also now back with us after a short break.

Many thanks to the volunteers today: Rizwan RAUF • Andrea BROUGHTON • Fran SANTOS • Ben LE ROUGETEL • Kirstie TEW • Lan-Lan SMITH • Craig GUNN • Melina DUER
