Red Dawn for Runners on Wormwood Scrubs

Regulars joined by 17 first timers braving rain and freezing wind

Another red dawn greeted us while the Beeb’s forecast said rain was on the way. Conditions on the Scrubs were 2 degrees centigrade with strengthening 8kt westerly wind. Ben Le Rougetel was Run Director. We assembled further back from the usual start. Ben explained that this was indeed the innovation trialled last week: instead of mud alley we were going straight across the Scrubs. Straight into the cold wind he should have said. Without further waiting Fran Santos abruptly set us off. As we rounded the first corner and began up towards the football pitches there were 4 abreast at the front, gradually diverging as it became apparent there were a couple of First Timers watching to see where we were going. The new windy alley turned out to be much firmer going.

Once Cosmo Craven of Fulham RC had established the new route there was no stopping him from crossing the line first in 18:50. First Timer Thomas Barnes crossed second in 19:35 and James Spender of Thames Valley Harriers was third in 20:00. Apparently there was a Scandinavian with an illegible barcode just behind me.

Leading Lady was Izzy David who improved on her first parkrun to cross the line in 24:23. Kiran Randhawa of Thames Valley Harriers was second female. Fran Lou of Darwen Dashers made it in 26:00 to place as third lady.

On an age-graded basis Cosmo Craven was 70.80%, James Spender managed 69.83% just edging out First Junior Alex Williams on 69.58% who also set a new PB in 20:23 and fifth overall.

This week 58 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 17 were first timers and 7 recorded new Personal Bests. Ruari Rhodes of Reading Storm Chasers set a new PB of 25:28 on his 8th run at Wormwood Scrubs!

Well done everybody!
