Making A Splash

Free swimming at the Phoenix Fitness Centre

The over-60s are being offered free swimming at the Phoenix Fitness Centre in Bloemfontein Road as part of the Government-funded 'Swim for Life' programme.

The scheme, which starts on 1 April, is part of a two-year national initiative to get people more active and tackle obesity.

Anyone aged 60 and over can enjoy the free swimming sessions by showing their Freedom Pass.

Mark Sesnan, Managing Director of the not-for-profit leisure operator, GLL, which runs the Phoenix Centre said: "We are strong supporters of the Government's 'Free Swimming' initiative and expect that it will increase demand for swimming facilities across the Capital. The scheme will impact everyone from non-swimmers dipping their toe into the water for the first time, to competitive club swimmers.”

The cross-Government initiative is part of a plan to leave a lasting legacy from London 2012, giving people more opportunities to get active.

The Council say they are looking at ways to offer a similar provision for under 16s in the near future.

Free swimming is funded by the Department of Health, the Department for Work and Pensions, Communities and Local Government, the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
